My book report for Awake, by Jen Hatmaker
I’ve read/listened to every book Jen Hatmaker has published!
She’s my favorite author!
I’ve seen her in person, been hugged by her, gave her a copy of my book, and had her sign one of hers.
Her humor, writing style, and perspectives make me laugh and feel seen.
She gave me “permission” to be myself in my writing and allowed me to believe that the right people would find my work, and they have.
I appreciate her honesty, transparency, and that she doesn’t sugar coat things when life is lifey.
So when her new book, Awake, came out in September, it was on my doorstep because I had preordered it. I loaned it to a friend because I want as many women’s eyes and hearts reading this book as possible. My copy will make the rounds in my friend group and I love being “book bossy.” Like, “There’s a great book you should read, and here, you don’t even have to go buy it!”
I also got it on Audible because I love listening to her narrate and it was like having the best one-sided conversation with a BFF even though she doesn’t know we’re BFF’s.
Awake is a memoir about when she discovered her husband had been having an affair, and her journey through self-discovery via therapy, lots of self-reflection, and taking an honest look at her role in her marriage’s demise.
It was so relatable because she talks about gender roles, the patriarchy and how it doesn’t just screw women over, co-dependent habits, and how she leaned on her people and took responsibility for getting her life where she wanted it to be.
I appreciated her honesty in describing life’s messiness which helps normalize our experiences so we can see that we’re not alone or broken. Our society’s systems are broken and we can change our participation in them.
I really loved this book!
I wish I could buy a copy of it for every woman!
I’ll definitely be listening to it again and passing my hard cover copy to anyone who wants to read it!
5/5 stars, highly recommend!
Thank you Jen! I appreciate you and your work!
