You don’t lack motivation
If you think you’re lazy, I bet that’s just an error in your thoughts about yourself.
I bet there are plenty of examples how you get sh*t done but there might be *one* thing or area where you seem to drag your feet or procrastinate.
Let’s look at what else could be going on besides the quick and dirty and shaming label of lazy.
The primitive part of our brains are only concerned with you staying alive from one day to the next.
Period. Hard stop.
They don’t like new things because they don’t have a frame of reference for them so new = potential danger.
Your brain thinks, “no thanks, we’ll pass, what crappy messages can we send them to keep them from doing the thing?”
And then you’ll start thinking things like you’re not good enough, why start because others are already doing the thing, I’ll start it tomorrow (while you spend hours scrolling on your phone or down rabbit holes on your computer), or I don’t have anything important to say or add.
And its plan works!
You don’t take the kitten step in front of you.
You shame and beat yourself up for the zillionth time when it’s just your brain trying to keep you “safe.”
WE get to decide if we’re going to believe the BS it tells us or if we’re going to see it for what it is!
Your brain is trying to protect you.
That’s.
All.
Don’t give so much weight to the messages!
Believe them 1% less today!
Take a kitten step even though you feel fear or anxiety!
Another reason your primitive brain doesn’t want you to take action is because it wants you to conserve your energy and calories.
Your primitive brain is not logical.
It does not know it’s 2025 and that there aren’t sabertooth tigers lurking behind bushes and corners just waiting to pounce.
Today’s tigers are emails from bosses, hard conversations, boundaries that need setting, business or creative ideas that are bursting to come out.
And your brain doesn’t want you to “waste” energy and calories doing new things because new things take more calories than things you’ve done a million times.
This is why you’re exhausted when you’re learning something new.
This is why we can easily revert back to old behavior. New behavior takes more energy and your brain doesn’t like that so it’ll try to get you to go back to what’s familiar and easy.
These are two biological and evolutionary reasons you are not lazy.
We need to frequently remind ourselves of these scientific truths and keep taking the next kitten step.
Those messages can be “along for the ride,” but they don’t get to choose the music or snacks!
You can’t and don’t need to eradicate your old thoughts.
Talk about a waste of time!
Their volume will automatically get turned down when you acknowledge their “warning” with a smidge of compassion and keep moving forward anyway.
When you can see and honor what’s going on in your healthy brain you can work with it instead of wasting time and energy fighting it and trying to solve a “problem” that doesn’t have to be a problem.
You got this, Sunshine and I’ve always got your back!
It’s really helpful to have someone looking at your thoughts with you, with compassion and curiosity, so you don’t stay stuck believing them.
I can be that someone.
A compassionate cheerleader and guide, helping you get where you want to go without circling the drain around your crappy thoughts.
I know it can be scary to let someone into your thoughts.
I totally get it!
It’s really brave to ask for help and I’m here if you’d like to see if coaching with me would be a good fit.
